House Republican campaigners on Wednesday attacked Rep. Jamaal Bowman (D-N.Y.), the far-left Democrat who lost in the primary to Westchester County Mayor George Latimer, and delivered the unemployment benefits package to Bowman’s congressional office.
The National Republican Congressional Committee (NRCC) blasted Bowman, a Bronx-Westchester Democrat, in a giveaway that referenced Bowman’s guilty plea last year to falsely setting off a fire alarm in order to delay a House vote.
The gift included a photograph of Bowman, 48, in full firefighter gear and a document advertising the position of “fire inspector.”
The unemployment application listed the job’s hourly wage as $28.25 — the equivalent of just under $60,000 a year before taxes — and attached a work reference from House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries (D-N.Y.), who supported Bowman and made a last-minute automated call on his behalf.
“If you are fired, please apply for unemployment insurance,” read the photo of a fire alarm that came with the severance package.
The “Squad” member was fired after Latimer defeated him by nearly 17 percentage points in the election for New York’s 16th Congressional District.
“Despite Hakeem Jeffries’ best efforts to support Jamaal Bowman, last night’s crushing 17-point defeat should be a major red flag for radical House Democrats and their commitment to anti-Semitism and defunding the police,” NRCC Emergency Affairs Director Macy Gardner said in a statement.
“While a new career as a firefighter may not be a reality for Mr. Bowman, he can apply for unemployment insurance. We wish him the best of luck and stay safe.”
Aides from Bowman’s office did not immediately respond to a request for comment, but he is later seen throwing the NRCC’s golden parachute opportunity in a trash can, according to video obtained by The Washington Post.
Bowman himself was spotted leaving his Yonkers home on Wednesday morning, wearing a gray “Star Wars” shirt and giving the cameras a sour look.
He declined to comment on his primary defeat and later blamed a Washington Post photographer for creating a “security hazard” by showing up on his doorstep.
Deputies should know that, because on September 30th of last year, he was seen on security camera footage pulling down two emergency exit signs from the door before pulling the fire alarm and then running away.
The alert forced the evacuation of Rep. Cannon’s office building for an hour and a half and delayed a House vote to avert a partial government shutdown.
Bowman said he “accidentally” pulled the door open because “I thought the alarm would go off and the door would open,” adding, “I was just trying to get to my polling place and the door that’s normally open wasn’t open, it was closed.”
But a Capitol Police investigator who investigated the incident testified that he saw the democratic socialist “jog” down the stairs after sounding the alarm, then “walk at a normal speed” as he emerged onto New Jersey Avenue and headed toward the U.S. Capitol.
Investigators say he then walked past at least seven other officers without telling them about his “accident.”
Rep. Dave Joyce (R-Ohio), a member of the House Ethics Committee, later said he was “shocked and disappointed” that a majority of the committee’s members “did not agree to proceed with any further action or investigation.”
“As a former secondary school principal and a sitting member of parliament, I cannot condone this type of behaviour,” he said in a statement.
Bowman pleaded guilty in October to one count of falsely setting off a fire alarm and agreed to pay a $1,000 fine, but was censured by the House of Representatives in December.
While a middle school principal, Bowman blogged about 9/11 conspiracy theories, including that Osama bin Laden was falsely “blamed” for the attacks and that Tower 7 at the World Trade Center was destroyed in a planned bombing.
He also belatedly apologized last week for claiming that initial reports of rape and murder of children by Hamas during the October 7 massacre were “lies.”
