Rep. Cori Bush (D-Missouri), a member of the Embassy Squad facing a tough primary election in August, called the pro-Israel advocacy group AIPAC a “threat to democracy” in a social media post on Wednesday.
She posted a statement on X headlined “My Statement on AIPAC’s Threat to Democracy,” adding, “Their far-right super PAC and their allies spent $20M to oust my brother, @JamaalBowmanNY.”
In a statement, she accused AIPAC (the American Israel Public Affairs Committee political action committee) of buying votes for fellow “Squad” member Rep. Jamaal Bowman (D-N.Y.), who recently lost by double digits in the primary to Westchester County Mayor George Latimer, a Democrat.
President Bush said in a statement: Anti-Semitic metaphors The Jews use money to control the world.
$20 million. That was the monumental price it took to unseat Jamaal Bowman, a Black man, former middle school principal, and a transformative, effective progressive Congressman who is unafraid to challenge the status quo and stand up for ordinary people. My brother-in-law is the true epitome of transformational leadership, bringing hope, change, love for all humanity, and the power of ordinary people in our community to Congress every day.
She accused the historically nonpartisan group of being backed by “far-right” megadonors and “billionaire extremists” who are “desperate to buy off our democracy.”
“AIPAC and its allies, backed by far-right Donald Trump megadonors, have poured huge amounts of money into this primary. It shows just how desperate these billionaire extremists are to buy off our democracy, advance their own interests, and silence voices of progress and justice. There’s no question that we need to get big money out of politics.
“The same extremists are coming to St. Louis,” she said, referring to AIPAC donors who support Bush’s Democratic primary opponent, Wesley Bell.
The same extremists are coming to St. Louis. They are funding fake progressive, former Republican campaigners and trying to buy Democratic seats. But let me be clear: St. Louis will not be silenced or sold off. We are going to stand up, and we …
AIPAC also endorsed Bowman’s challenger, Latimer.
However, Bowman had a brief but tarnished career in Congress, where he gained notoriety for illegally setting off a fire alarm to delay a vote in the House of Representatives and then lying about it. He was later indicted on charges of falsely setting off a fire alarm, ordered to pay $1,000, and received a plea deal that allowed the charges to be dropped within three months if he formally apologized to the Capitol Police.
He also made headlines after yelling at his colleague, Rep. Thomas Massie (R-Ky.), in a hallway.
But Bowman recently drew attention for a series of anti-Israel comments that angered mainstream pro-Israel Democrats after Hamas’ Oct. 7 attack on Israel. For example, Bowman denounced reports that Hamas terrorists had raped Israeli women as “propaganda” and a “lie.” He later apologized for those comments. But at a recent rally with his squad member, Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-NY), he called for a “ceasefire” in the war between Israel and Hamas, shouted expletives, and swung a chair over his head.
