Senior Hamas official Khaled Meshaal told Sky News on Thursday that Gaza has been “devastated” as a result of the war Hamas launched on October 7, but that the destruction is “part of our people’s march towards liberation.”
But he says this is all part of the “national march towards liberation.”
Meshaal was once Hamas’s politburo leader and has reportedly amassed a net worth of around $4 billion while living in comfortable exile in Doha, Qatar.
Asked about Meshaal’s comments, Israeli government spokesman David Mensah said: “The IDF today released evidence that, far from the commonly held belief that the majority of buildings in the Gaza Strip have been destroyed, only 17 percent of buildings in the Strip have been destroyed, and not the much higher figures cited by other organizations.”
Regarding Meshaal’s “willingness to sacrifice his own people for the so-called ‘March to Liberation,'” Mensah said, “It is important for people who want a better future to be part of activities that unite people towards a better future. The only ‘liberation’ is the liberation of Gaza from Hamas.”
