Republican Rep. Chip Roy of Texas said Friday that he plans to introduce a resolution to impeach President Joe Biden after Thursday night’s presidential debate.
Roy announced his intentions in a post on X on Friday morning, saying the 25th amendment would mobilize Biden’s Cabinet and formally declare the president unable to perform his official duties.Biden’s performance in Thursday night’s debate with former President Donald Trump has been widely described as a complete failure, even by Democratic Party insiders and media outlets that have generally covered Biden’s presidency and campaign generally favorably. Section 4 of the 25th Amendment to the Constitution, which Roy said he plans to invoke, gives the vice president and a majority of the Cabinet the power to declare the president unfit to continue in office and replace Biden with Vice President Kamala Harris. according to to the National Constitution Center.

“I, [vice president] Immediately exercise the power under Section 4 of the 25th Amendment to convene and mobilize the principal officers of the Cabinet, [president] “I am unable to discharge my duties and powers effectively,” Roy wrote in the post.
The president sounded hoarse, coughed intermittently and occasionally struggled to form coherent sentences throughout his debate speech. Overall, Biden’s performance rekindled questions and concerns about his intellectual acuity and fitness for duty, especially since Special Counsel Robert Hur’s February assessment of the president as a “well-meaning elderly man with a frail memory.”
The White House did not immediately respond to a request for comment.
