After President Joe Biden came under heavy criticism for his performance in Thursday’s debate, international pundits and commentators were happy to criticize everything from the 81-year-old president’s appearance to his voice and even how often (or lack thereof) he blinks.

The president’s closest European allies criticised his “appalling” performance in the media, while a representative for President Vladimir Putin claimed the Russian leader had not paid attention to the “catastrophic” exchange of arguments.
“The debate was very entertaining for many Chinese people,” said Hu Xijin, a leading Chinese commentator and former state media editor. I wrote to X (Twitter) Early Friday morning, he called Biden and Donald Trump’s performance in Atlanta “a negative advertisement for Western Democracy.”
While much of the talk surrounding Biden’s performance centered on his declining cognitive abilities and age, some foreign media outlets criticized Trump for “lying on some of his claims,” but outside the U.S. news and media outlets plagiarized talking points from state-run media, mainly left-leaning outlets. NPR.
NPR We tried to fact-check when Trump said during a debate that “migrants who cross the border are committing crimes.”
June 28Number, NPR writes, “There’s no doubt that some immigrants who cross the border without authorization commit crimes, something Republicans have been insisting strongly since the recent murder indictment of two Venezuelan immigrants for the killing of a 12-year-old girl. But the data shows that the vast majority of immigrants do not commit crimes. In fact, a 150-year study from Northwestern University found that immigrants are less likely to commit crimes than people born in the United States.”
However, social media users on X (Twitter) chimed in on the simple “fact check,” saying the outlet seemed to be grasping at straws, so to speak, given that while there are millions of unvetted foreigners in the US illegally, that group makes up nowhere near the majority of US residents.
When a demographic makes up a much smaller percentage of the country compared to legal citizens, it is already assumed that they are not committing the most crimes overall.
Two people I contacted recently New York Post They each offered their opinions on the current immigration review process under the Biden administration.
“We are doing checks, but unless we actually hit a database or have an interaction with U.S. law enforcement, we don’t really know,” a Border Patrol source told reporters. “The screening doesn’t tell us much.” [Alejandro Mayorkas] “That means fingerprinting and a half-assed background check that’s virtually inaccessible outside the U.S. If so, it’s certainly a great process,” the agent added sarcastically.
“In February 2024, the foreign-born population of the United States will hit a record high of 51.4 million. [account for] “At 15.5 percent of the U.S. population, this surpasses all previous records,” the Center for Immigration Studies reports, but 15.5 percent is still far from a majority of the total population.
“The average increase in the foreign-born population under President Biden is four times the average monthly increase of 42,000 under President Trump before the COVID-19 pandemic, and twice the average of 68,000 under President Obama,” the group continued.
France 24A publicly funded French news outlet based in Paris published an article with the following headline: “Biden Stumbles, Trump Lies in First 2024 US Presidential Debate.”
But only two of Trump’s alleged lies from the debate were mentioned.
Two of his claims – that immigrants are causing a crime wave and that the Democratic Party supports infanticide – have been deemed false by French media.
The media subsequently emphasized essentially the same arguments. NPR: “Research shows [illegal] Immigrants commit crimes at no higher rates than native-born Americans.”
Additionally, Trump’s infanticide comments during the debate were a reference to earlier comments by former Virginia Governor Ralph Northam, a Democrat, who said in a past interview that “when we talk about late-term abortions, they’re done when there’s a possibility that there’s a severe birth defect, that the fetus is not viable.”
Governor Northam has faced fierce backlash from both Republicans and Democrats after he voiced support for a state bill that would significantly relax restrictions on late-term abortions.
In another analysis NBC News It also focused on the infanticide allegation, reporting that “some Democrats support broad access to abortion regardless of gestational age, but that infanticide is illegal…”
Meanwhile, back in the realm of foreign experts and reporters, Biden was described by state media as “regularly disruptive.” Beijing News The president faced further criticism in China, where he was described as looking “like a robot and barely blinking” in a post he posted on Weibo, China’s version of Twitter, or “X.”
In a scathing debate on China’s microblogging platform, some argued that Biden was showing “clear signs of dementia” and that those who deny this were living under a delusion. Moreover, Housha Moonlight, a well-known Chinese blogger with around 4 million followers on the platform, declared that “Trump won” the first of two debates scheduled for 2024.
“The content of the debate doesn’t matter, what matters is that a witty and flexible Trump successfully highlighted the sleeping king’s aging and dying image,” Moonlight said.
Others also chimed in on the online thread, likening Biden to a “Teletubby” character and saying it was a “miracle” that he was able to stay standing throughout the heated debate.
“To be honest, Trump is 78 years old, but his ability to think and react quickly is far greater than many young people in their 30s and 40s,” one Chinese commenter wrote, translated into English.
Meanwhile, other foreign leaders seemed less interested in the televised one-on-one debate.
Russian President Vladimir Putin asked his spokesman, Dmitry Peskov, to make a “statement without” on the matter.
“No one would expect that the Russian president would set his alarm and get up early in the morning to watch the US debates, would he?” Peskov told reporters when asked if Putin had watched the debate. Reuters report.
“There are many issues that are really important for our country and that concern us. These are issues that the president is working on. The US debate is not among the main issues on the agenda,” the Russian added.
Furthermore, the Italian publication Corriere della Sera He noted that Biden’s voice was “hoarse” and he appeared very “confused.”
Swedish broadcaster described the commander’s actions as “almost catastrophic.” SVT And it’s sad to watch. Onett According to the Polish outlet, Newsweek.
Biden’s habit of not finishing sentences is a French Le Monde Outlets, UK publications economist They slammed his performance as “terrible” and threatened to “call into question his candidacy itself.”
Posted CNN A poll conducted immediately after the debate showed 67% CNNViewer poll respondents declared Trump the winner, while only 33% declared Biden the winner.
September 10NumberThe candidates will face off again in the second and final debate of this election season.
