While nearly half of voters are pro-abortion, the Democratic advantage on the issue has “diminished to the point where it is statistically negligible.” according to From the Rasmussen Report.
A new Rasmussen poll found that 45% of U.S. voters trust Democrats more than Republicans to handle the abortion issue, while 43% trust Republicans more and 12% are undecided.
“Democrats’ advantage on the issue is down from a four-point margin in January (43 percent to 39 percent) and has shrunk significantly since last November, when Democrats held an 11-point lead on the abortion issue,” the poll said.
The survey found that nearly half of voters (49%) consider themselves pro-life, while 42% are anti-life and 10% don’t know – the latest results are unchanged since Rasmussen last polled on the issue in January.
As expected, self-identified pro-life voters overwhelmingly trust Democrats to handle the abortion issue, at 75%, while anti-abortion voters also have more confidence in Republicans on the issue, at 74%.
By party affiliation, 72% of Democrats are generally pro-life, while 64% of Republicans are anti-life. Independent voters are sharply divided on the issue, with 46% in favor, 41% against, and 14% unsure.
“A majority of partisan voters – 82% of Democrats and 80% of Republicans – trust their party more on how to handle abortion issues. Among independent voters, 41% trust Democrats more, 40% trust Republicans more, and 19% are undecided,” the survey said.
Women are slightly more likely than men to support abortion, 50% to 47%. Interestingly, more men than women say they trust Democrats to handle the abortion issue, 47% to 44%.
Younger voters under 40 overwhelmingly trust Democrats to handle the abortion issue, 50 percent to 37 percent. Older voters trust Republicans more on the issue, but by a “narrow margin,” according to the report.
The survey was conducted June 18-20 among 1,080 voters, with a margin of error of plus or minus 3 percentage points and a confidence level of 95 percent.
