The Clippers released a statement about George’s departure before he officially signed with his new team.

In their statement about George’s departure, the Clippers cited the tougher luxury tax threshold under the new CBA. The threat of penalties for crossing the “second apron” also contributed to the Denver Nuggets losing Kentavious Caldwell-Pope to the Orlando Magic in free agency.
The Clippers reportedly offered George a similar contract. Kawhi Leonard’s three-year, $153 million contract extensionbut did not agree to a four-year contract. George is seeking a four-year max contract.
The Clippers opened free agency on Sunday and agreed to a two-year, $70 million contract extension with James Harden.
Maxey is a restricted free agent this offseason, so the 76ers have the right to match any contract he receives, and Maxey is expected to re-sign with the Sixers after the franchise made some big moves in free agency.
George is 34 and is coming off another strong season with the Clippers, averaging 22.6 points, 5.2 rebounds, 3.5 assists and 1.5 steals per game while shooting 41.3 percent from the 3-point line (7.9 attempts per game) and 90.7 percent from the free throw line.
