Trade evaluations for the 76ers and Celtics major deal as Boston parts with its star for less than expected

The Boston Celtics proposed a trade to the Milwaukee Bucks involving Jaylen Brown in exchange for Giannis Antetokounmpo. However, Milwaukee opted for a deal with the Miami Heat instead. This led Boston to aggressively shop Brown around the league, even though he hadn’t demanded a trade. Recently, the Celtics made the surprising move to trade Brown to a rival, the Philadelphia 76ers.

In the exchange, Philadelphia acquired Brown in return for Paul George, a 2031 unprotected first-round draft pick, a 2028 first-round pick—potentially convertible—and two second-round selections, as reported. Notably, the Sixers hadn’t been on Brown’s initial trade wish list, especially since they just eliminated the Celtics from the 2026 NBA playoffs. But, it did happen.

Should Joel Embiid stay healthy, the Sixers could be strong contenders for the Eastern Conference title. Meanwhile, the Celtics seem to be looking to take a step back now but plan to move forward later. Let’s take a closer look at this swap from both perspectives.

Celtics perspective on Jaylen Brown trade

It appears the Celtics were originally asking for four first-round picks for Brown but ultimately settled for a less impressive package from Philadelphia.

At this point, Brown is nearing 30 and just had his best season yet, earning All-NBA Second Team honors. Jayson Tatum, recovering from a torn Achilles, noted it was a highly productive year, even leading the Celtics to 56 victories and being named the 2024 NBA Finals MVP. So, why trade him for what seems like a lackluster return?

Following their defeat to the Sixers in the 2026 playoffs, the Celtics apparently concluded that maintaining the current roster wasn’t viable. With over $180 million left on Brown’s contract, Boston seemed keen to clear financial space and felt it was time to part ways with him after his standout season.

It’s a surprising decision. Brown and Tatum helped the Celtics win a championship in 2024. I wonder if they shouldn’t have given Tatum another full season to recover before making such drastic moves. Clearly, Brad Stevens didn’t believe the current lineup was capable of clinching another title and chose to shake things up. Yet, the return in this trade feels pretty underwhelming.

Paul George’s deal still carries two years and $110 million, and it’s questionable whether he can live up to Brown’s contributions. There’s a possibility the Celtics will look to flip him, especially with that valuable 2031 first-round pick in their arsenal. For now, Boston may need to recalibrate while watching as other teams in the conference rise.

Brown’s a bit of a controversial player. I once referred to him as one of the worst contracts in the league, and the Celtics did appear to perform better without him last season. But honestly, he’s durable and effective, a solid player despite concerns about the max contract he received. This trade shows a bold move from Brad Stevens; I want it to succeed, but I’m not entirely convinced it’s enough.

76ers perspective on acquiring Jaylen Brown

Honestly, it’s surprising the Celtics managed to execute this deal. New general manager Mike Gansey is definitely aiming high, bringing in a star at the peak of his career, which could elevate Philadelphia to new heights in the Eastern Conference.

Brown will now join Tyrese Maxey and VJ Edgecomb on the wings, while Embiid remains at center. The Sixers added Dean Wade as a power forward during free agency, and with rookie LaBaron Fillon, along with forwards Justin Edwards, Dominick Barlow, and center Adem Bona, they seem poised for a shot at the title. However, their bench appears to be a bit shaky, which isn’t promising since depth is crucial for recent champions. That said, they still have time to strengthen their roster.

On paper, this starting five looks formidable. Yet, games aren’t played on paper. I’m curious how Brown’s playing style will mesh with Maxey’s. Embiid’s overall performance hinges on the team’s cohesiveness, and it’s uncertain if he can maintain peak performance through the playoffs. Still, this trade gives the Sixers a championship ceiling, and the cost to achieve it seems reasonable. The risk lies in signing Brown, but in my view, it’s a gamble worth taking. The Sixers might just challenge the Knicks and Raptors next season, making this playoff run a reality.
