Lara Trump: Democrats plugging in new candidate would violate democratic process

Republican National Committee co-chair Lara Trump said Sunday that the possibility of Democrats ignoring Vice President Harris and choosing another candidate if President Biden drops out of the presidential race would violate the democratic process.

The daughter-in-law of former President Donald Trump told Fox Business host Maria Bartiromo that Democrats are in a “bad place across the board” following Biden’s poor performance with her father-in-law in last week’s debate.

“Joe Biden says he’s not going anywhere. His campaign came out right after the debate saying not only is he not going to back out, but he’s committed to having the debate in September. That’s shocking,” Trump said on “Sunday Morning Futures.” “But Kamala Harris has approval ratings that are about the same as Joe Biden’s, or maybe even worse.”

“So they’re in big trouble. If they take Joe Biden out of the running in any way, if they don’t have Kamala Harris as their nominee and they try to put somebody else in, Maria, that would literally go against the democratic process in this country,” Trump continued.

Trump noted that millions of American voters chose Biden in this year’s Democratic primaries and that he won enough delegates to become the party’s presumptive presidential nominee.

“If they decide at the last minute to nominate someone else rather than Kamala Harris, I can’t imagine a greater attack on our democratic process,” Trump said.

Biden’s lackluster performance in last week’s presidential debate has sounded the alarm for many in the Democratic Party. Some Democrats have called for the president to resign following his disastrous performance in the debate, but national officials have yet to publicly join the calls and Biden’s campaign has said he isn’t going anywhere.

Even if Biden chooses to remain in the 2024 presidential race, he cannot be expelled at the Democratic National Convention in August because he has already won the primary. Under Democratic National Committee (DNC) rules, any delegates he wins must pledge to support his nomination unless he decides to drop out.

Ms Harris has been attracting attention in political circles as a possible replacement if she were to drop out of the race, with other potential replacements including Michigan Governor Gretchen Whitmer and California Governor Gavin Newsom.

Lara Trump said she is confident her father-in-law can win the presidency, whether the top candidate is Biden, Harris or someone else.

“We had four years of Donald Trump. We know how secure our border was. We know how much more money was in people’s pockets, how much cheaper it was to buy gas, how much safer we felt on the world stage when Donald Trump was in office. And people want him back in office,” she said.
