Cartel-Destined Weapons Cache Seized at Texas Border with Mexico

U.S. Customs and Border Protection agents seized a large amount of weapons at the Progresso International Bridge after the weapons were found inside a vehicle traveling in the southbound lanes of the bridge that connects Texas and Mexico.

According to a statement from CBP officials, CBP Field Operations Office officers working at the Progreso International Bridge on Wednesday selected a vehicle in an outbound lane for a secondary inspection. Using CBP’s K-9 team and non-intrusive inspection systems, officers discovered a large amount of weapons, ammunition and ammunition believed to be destined for Mexican drug cartels.

Officers seized 67 rifles, handguns and shotguns concealed in the vehicle, along with 69 magazines and 33 rounds of ammunition.

“Our frontline officers continue to remain vigilant and effectively combined their training, screening experience and technology to seize a significant amount of undeclared weapons,” Progresso/Donna Port of Entry Director Walter Weaver said in a written statement. “These seizures perfectly illustrate and demonstrate CBP’s ongoing commitment to securing the U.S.-Mexico border.”

The officers turned over the weapon and suspect to ICE Homeland Security Investigations for criminal investigation.

Officers assigned to the port of entry in Pharr, Texas, found a shipment of more than 1,400 pounds of marijuana inside a tractor a few days later, authorities reported.
