Former White House press secretary and current MSNBC host Jen Psaki made it clear that she holds her former boss, President Joe Biden, entirely responsible for his abysmal performance in last week’s debate with former President Donald Trump.
Psaki wrote to X that outsiders are wrong to blame former White House chief of staff Ronald Klain and adviser Anita Dunn for their role in pre-debate preparations, because they “have successfully prepared many candidates, including Obama, Clinton and Biden.”
“It was a terrible debate. There’s no doubt they were tough, strategic and forthright (I witnessed them in action) but preparation doesn’t always determine the outcome. Biden was terrible. This is an important conversation about what happens next, but if you’re directing your anger at ‘preparation’ you’re not talking about the right thing,” she continued.
“But at this point, we can’t expect a white knight to stand between Donald Trump and the White House.”
Psaki’s criticism of Biden’s performance is aimed not just at Biden himself, but at his family, whom she considers her closest advisers, who have pushed the idea that Biden’s debate preparations have undermined him and who have reportedly been the most vocal in persuading Biden to stay in the presidential race.
Democrats have sought to publicly project unity in the days since the debate, but the president’s largely incoherent performance in last week’s debate exploded long-simmering tensions within the party over the question of whether he will be able to serve out his term in office.
Recent calls with major campaign donors led to some calling for refunds, while Michigan Governor Gretchen Whitmer felt compelled to say she was not involved in a whispered campaign to make herself Biden’s nominee at the upcoming convention.
Meanwhile, Psaki Dedicated Psaki said on her show that there was no time at this stage in the election to acknowledge that Biden was irreplaceable, but that calls for him to step down were not going to die down anytime soon.
“They’re real, they’re valid, and they’re not going to go away. … But at this point, you can’t expect a white knight to stand between Donald Trump and the White House. At this point, you just have Joe Biden and … the American people,” she said.
