Celtics give Jayson Tatum largest contract in NBA history following title victory: reports

Jayson Tatum’s summer just got even better after he won his first career NBA title.

According to multiple reports, the Boston Celtics have reportedly agreed to a five-year, $314 million supermax contract extension with a player option with Tatum, which would be the largest contract in NBA history.

The 26-year-old star helped the Celtics beat the Dallas Mavericks in five games to win their first franchise championship since 2008. Tatum averaged 22.2 points, 7.8 rebounds and 7.2 assists in that series, but the Finals MVP award went to All-Star Jaylen Brown.

Brown earned a then-record contract extension from the Celtics last year, and their chemistry in Beantown was so good that it would make sense for the franchise to give it to Tatum, one of the best wings in the NBA today.

The move was expected, but the five-time All-Star and four-time All-NBA selection has exceeded hype since being drafted third overall by the Celtics in 2017 out of Duke University.

Tatum has averaged 23.1 points, 7.2 rebounds and 3.5 assists while shooting 46% from the field in 513 games played so far in his career. He has finished in the top six in MVP voting each of the past three seasons and should be a perennial All-Star candidate as long as he stays healthy on the court.

In addition to signing Tatum, the Celtics have reportedly agreed to terms with Derrick White, the versatile guard who helped Boston win last season by averaging 15.2 points and shooting a career-best 39.6 percent from three-point range.

White started all 73 games last season and benefited greatly from joining Tatum, Brown and the rest as a reliable player with the ball in his hands and when pushing forward as a defender.

Boston obviously wants to continue that trend next season, but having Brown and Tatum under contract for the future signals to the rest of the league that the Celtics should be playoff contenders for years to come.

The Celtics have reached the Eastern Conference Finals in four of the past five seasons, winning twice and finally winning the Larry O’Brien Trophy this season.

Tatum would undoubtedly like to have at least one banner to hang at TD Garden.
