Anecdote after anecdote about how leading Democrats reacted to President Joe Biden’s poor debate performance paints an ugly picture similar to the reaction to Donald Trump’s 2016 victory.
CNN report On Sunday, a debate viewing party in Los Angeles featuring Vice President Kamala Harris’ husband, Doug Emhoff, was reported to have descended into chaos minutes after it began due to Biden’s apparent mental breakdown.
Rob Reiner cried out in defeat and Jane Fonda had tears in her eyes.
After widespread calls on social media and television the night after the debate for Biden to resign, Democrats and their allies have increasingly moved publicly to say Biden should stay on. Biden has made clear he has no plans to drop out of the race.
One reason is that if Biden were to withdraw, Harris, who is even less popular than Biden, would run in the election. Another candidate, like California Governor Gavin Newsom, would infuriate his base for losing a black woman to a white man. Finding another candidate at this stage in the election would be too cumbersome and would make the Democratic Party look even more dysfunctional than it already is. There is also the question of how the Democratic Party will deal with the problem of states now well past their deadlines for submitting ballots.
“Democrats know they’re in trouble if they continue to support a weak Biden.”
MSNBC host Joy Reid released a video explaining that it’s OK for Biden to be disabled.
“I don’t care about Biden’s age or infirmity. He may be able to get around in a wheelchair. I don’t care. Donald John Trump cannot be allowed back in the White House,” she said.
But Democrats know they’ll face problems if they continue to support a weak Biden. NBC report During a Biden campaign conference call with some of its major donors, some of whom asked for their donations to be refunded, while others expressed indignation that they were simply listening to arguments that Biden was still the Democratic nominee.
according to POLITICOMichigan Governor Gretchen Whitmer called Biden campaign chief Jennifer O’Malley Dillon to say she did not support putting her name forward as Biden’s replacement, but warned that Michigan “is no longer a winnable place for Biden” after his performance in last week’s debate.
“Tensions are rising,” one Democratic governor told Politico. “There’s a lot of anxiety and a lot of people are feeling very anxious.”
