The Supreme Court’s long-awaited decision that former presidents enjoy broad immunity from liability for official acts while in the White House was repeatedly praised by former President Trump hours after the court’s landmark ruling.
“Great writing and wise,” Trump wrote on social media about the ruling, which is expected to deal a major blow to the ongoing prosecution of Trump for trying to overturn his 2020 presidential election defeat to President Biden.
“The Supreme Court’s decision was much more impactful than some expected,” Trump said.
Monday’s action by the conservative-majority Supreme Court, which includes three justices appointed by Trump, means that lower court judges will now have to consider whether the charges against Trump were based on official or informal acts of the then-president.

The process will take time, and there is a slim chance that a rematch will take place in 2024 between the former president and his Democratic successor, with Trump being tried for trying to overturn the results of the 2020 election before the electoral vote.
In an exclusive interview with Fox News’ Brooke Singman, President Trump called it “a huge victory for our Constitution and our democracy.”

But Quentin Fulks, Biden’s chief deputy campaign strategist, said in a conference call with reporters that “this decision gives Donald Trump an excuse to do what he has said he wants to do for months – seek revenge and retaliation against his political opponents.”
“This is a pivotal moment for our country. Three of the Supreme Court’s conservative justices owe it to Donald Trump, but they have only made it easier for him to move down the path to dictatorship,” Fulks argued.
The big question now is how the Supreme Court’s ruling on presidential immunity will affect a rematch between Biden and Trump, with just over four months to go until the November election.

The president has long accused Trump of being a threat to democracy, making that claim a central argument in his campaign for a second term in the White House.
And in a speech Monday night, Biden emphasized that point.
“The American people must decide whether it is acceptable for Mr. Trump to resort to violence to stay in power. Perhaps most importantly, the American people must decide whether to once again entrust the presidency to Donald Trump. Mr. Trump will now be even more emboldened to do whatever he wants, whenever he wants, how he wants,” the president stressed.
Some Biden supporters see a ray of hope in the Supreme Court’s move.
“This decision is encouraging to voters who value our democracy, our Constitution and the rule of law,” said Maria Carodna, a Democratic strategist and presidential campaign veteran. “The Supreme Court’s decision was a victory for Donald Trump alone and a huge loss for our country and our democracy, so it encourages voters to work hard to elect President Biden.”
“Voters need to understand that the president matters when it comes to the makeup of the Supreme Court, as evidenced by today’s dangerous decisions from the MAGA Supreme Court that Trump created,” Cardona, a member of the Democratic National Committee, argued.

Joe Caiazzo, a Democratic strategist who has worked on several presidential campaigns, said voters will remember the ruling when they cast their ballots this fall.
“The importance of this election continues to grow as this activist court attacks reproductive rights, environmental protections and now the integrity of our ability to hold elected officials accountable for their actions. Voters will remember this in November,” Caiazo said.

But Ryan Williams, a Republican consultant and communicator who has worked on several Republican presidential campaigns, said the ruling “makes it less likely that Trump will be in court before the election. This is a win for Trump.”
“The more serious charges are being brought in federal court, and the general consensus is that by holding them until after the election, it will avoid any distractions during the campaign,” Ryan added. “Trump can continue to campaign and focus on the election, rather than preparing for a trial before Election Day. This is a win for Trump.”
