Trump Leads Biden; Half Say Trump ‘Won’ Showdown

A Suffolk University/USA Today poll showed former President Donald Trump leading President Joe Biden after the debate, with half of respondents saying Trump easily won the matchup.

This survey photograph The debate took place from Friday, June 28th to Sunday, June 30th, the day after Thursday night’s debate between Trump and Biden.

Among candidates including third-party candidates, Trump leads with 41 percent approval, four points ahead of Biden’s 38 percent. Independent candidate Robert F. Kennedy Jr. is third with 8 percentage points. Independent candidate Cornel West, Green Party candidate Jill Stein and Libertarian Party candidate Chase Oliver all have 1 percent approval.

The results showed Trump’s approval rating at 41 percent, up four points from May’s results, while Biden’s was up one point, when they were both tied at 37 percent.

USA Today also pointed out that the results suggest that “differences in enthusiasm may ultimately affect voter turnout.”

“Trump supporters are much more enthusiastic about their candidate than Biden supporters are, and this difference in enthusiasm could be a deciding factor in persuading Biden supporters to actually vote in the fall,” the article read.

Trump supporters are actually more enthusiastic about their candidate than Biden supporters: More than half, 59%, said they were “very excited” to vote for the candidate, followed by 33% who said they were “somewhat excited.”

Meanwhile, only 29% of Biden supporters said they were “very excited” to vote for their candidate, while 31% said they were “somewhat excited.”

The survey also found that half of respondents said Trump won the debate, while only 11% said Biden won. The survey was conducted among 1,000 registered voters from June 28 to 30, 2024. The margin of error is plus or minus 3.1 percentage points.

That’s consistent with other post-debate surveys that have projected an uphill battle for Biden: Pollster Frank Luntz’s focus group of undecided voters, for example, said they would prefer Biden run after the debate.

“After the first commercial, I asked my focus group how many of you were more certain to vote for Joe Biden. Zero people raised their hands,” Luntz said midway through the debate.

According to Luntz, “half of them” voted for Biden in 2020.

“After the second commercial break, I asked undecided voters in my focus groups how many of them were now more certain to vote for Donald Trump. Ten in 14 raised their hands… even though they didn’t like Donald Trump,” he found. This is more dire news for Biden.
