Twenty-five House Democrats prepare to call for Biden to end re-election effort: report

At least 25 House Democrats are preparing to ask former President Donald Trump, 81, not to seek reelection following his disastrous debate defeat.

According to the outlet, moderate Democratic House members in battleground districts most at risk of losing their seats in November are so alarmed by Biden’s frail appearance in last week’s showdown with the 78-year-old Republican challenger that they are considering writing him a letter.

What to know about the impact of President Biden’s debate performance:

These lawmakers have been bombarded with questions about Biden from constituents since returning to their districts for the House of Representatives’ Independence Week recess.

“It’s like a dam has broken,” said a Democratic congressional aide. He told the media.

The report came after Rep. Lloyd Doggett (D-Texas) became the first House Democrat to call on President Biden to step down, citing a shaky debate in which Biden froze on stage at times and lost his train of thought.

Rep. Jared Golden (D-Maine) also said Tuesday he isn’t confident Biden can beat Trump in November.

Rep. Marie Grusenkamp Perez (D-Wash.) similarly stated: Local outlet KATU“I think the truth is that Biden will lose to Trump.”

“I know it’s difficult, but I think the damage was done in that debate,” she added, but stopped short of calling on Biden to drop out of the race.

Biden is scheduled to meet with Democratic governors on Wednesday to discuss his 2024 strategy and how he might perform in a debate with Trump.

The White House also signaled that meetings between Biden and congressional leaders are also being planned.

The offices of several House Democratic leaders did not respond to The Washington Post’s requests for comment.
