
An elderly woman Beaten and killed California police say she was killed by a vehicle driven by an armed thug who was trying to rob her and her husband outside an upscale shopping mall in Orange County.
According to the Newport Beach Police Department, the incident began around 3:30pm on Tuesday when two men approached the couple outside the Barnes & Noble bookstore in the Fashion Island Shopping Center.
“Honestly, go to hell with these guys. They knew exactly what they were doing.”
Police said the two men tried to rob the couple, but the couple fought back.
At that point, police said a getaway vehicle, described as a white Toyota Camry, arrived at the scene of the altercation. One of the suspects fled the scene, firing a gun multiple times, but no one was injured.
When a white Toyota Camry suddenly sped off, the driver struck the woman.
“Tragically and unfortunately, she died on the roadway,” Sergeant Steve Oberon of Newport Police Station said.
Police said the suspects in the car spotted a third suspect who fled, leading to a high-speed pursuit through Los Angeles at speeds up to 110 mph. The suspects then abandoned the vehicle in South Gate and fled on foot.
The three suspects were apprehended by police and arrested.
Oberon declined to say what the suspects were after – jewelry or shopping bags.
“All that will come out of the investigation,” he added. “We don’t have that information at this time.”
Newport Beach Mayor Will O’Neill said the suspect’s arrest was thanks to an overwhelming law enforcement response.
“Let me say this bluntly: these men should go to hell,” O’Neill said. “They knew exactly what they were doing when they decided to come to this city to commit a crime, and a woman is dead because of it.”
Police said the husband was not physically injured during the altercation.
The woman who died then Identified Patricia McKay, 68. The couple were tourists from New Zealand.
The suspects have been identified as 28-year-old LeRoyannest Joseph McCrary of Compton, 18-year-old Jayden Cunningham of Lancaster and 18-year-old Malachi Darnell of Los Angeles.
