Stellantis Temporarily Laying Off 1,600 Auto Workers

Multinational automaker Stellantis will temporarily lay off about 1,600 auto workers at its Warren Truck Assembly Plant outside Detroit, Michigan, after executives cut production.

Stellantis executives Announced The company cut production at its Warren plant from two shifts a day to one this month and imposed layoffs, but executives said the layoffs were “to keep production in line with sales” even as sales of the Jeep Wagoneer and Grand Wagoneer are growing.

Autoworkers at the Warren plant also build the Ram 1500 Classic pickup truck.

Similarly, Stellantis executives said production of the Jeep Gladiator would be halted for six weeks in July and August at its Toledo Assembly Plant in Toledo, Ohio. Gladiator sales fell 24% in the second quarter from a year ago.

In a letter to United Auto Workers (UAW) members, auto workers affected by the Gladiator halt will be redeployed to Jeep Wrangler production, but UAW leaders suggested some of those workers should expect to be laid off during the first two weeks of the six-week production shutdown.

Stellantis’ latest layoffs and production cuts come after executives carried out multiple mass layoffs across the U.S. in order to move production overseas, Automotive News reports. Report:

The automaker laid off 199 full-time employees at its Sterling Heights, Michigan, plant in April.which produces the Ram 1500. Stellantis also cut 2% of its U.S. engineering, technology and software jobs. — About 400 people — announced in March, citing “unprecedented uncertainty and increased competitive pressures around the world.” [Emphasis added]

The automaker laid off 341 support workers at its Toledo, Ohio, plant.The plant, which produces the Jeep Wrangler and Gladiator, began operations in March. It also laid off 239 workers at its parts processing plant in Detroit. Near the Jeep Grand Cherokee assembly plant. [Emphasis added]

In May, Breitbart News reported that Stellantis executives were working to launch the first hydrogen-fueled vehicle for the U.S. market, though the car would be built at a factory in Saltillo, Mexico.

Last year, I checked the records, American Outlook Indicated Workers at Stellantis’ Saltillo plant earn just $2.54 an hour.

Amid the production cuts and layoffs, Stellantis CEO Carlos Tavares secured a $39 million compensation package, making him the highest-paid auto executive in the U.S. The title was previously held by General Motors CEO Mary Barra with a $27.8 million compensation package.
