CNN commentator and political analyst Van Jones revealed that Democrats are privately discussing how best to succeed President Biden with just a few months until November.

“Let’s be honest with you, everybody goes on TV and says great things, but behind the scenes there’s total panic,” Jones told CNN on Wednesday.

Biden met with Democratic governors across the country on Wednesday night in an effort to shore up support after his weak performance in a debate with former President Trump.

But outside the White House, Democrats are planning how to run the campaign without Biden, Jones suggested.

“People are circulating legal memos, PDFs are flying around on WhatsApp, exploring what their options are,” he said.

“How do you replace Biden,” he said. “How do you get him to give the respect he should get?”

“The conversations we have on air and off air are completely different,” Jones said.

The commentator, a former adviser to President Barack Obama, defended Biden but said he still needed to be replaced.

“We have a great candidate,” Jones said. “We have a great person. We have a person who loves this country. We have a person who has given every last drop of his life to this country. But he may not get across the finish line. And a mature political party has to take that into account.”

Jones acknowledged that some Democrats are urging Biden to “make his choice” about whether to step down, but he said conversations he’s been aware of don’t leave the final decision up to Biden.

“There’s a big debate going on right now. how This is what happens, whether“As for another Democratic candidate to replace Biden,” Jones said, suggesting that the replacement could be Vice President Kamala Harris.

Several current and former House Democrats have indicated they would support Harris to succeed the 81-year-old vice president if she chooses to step down.

Rep. Summer Lee, D-Pennsylvania, a member of the House’s progressive “squad,” said Harris was the “natural choice” to succeed Biden. Rep. Jim Clyburn, D-Calif., a longtime Biden ally, said: I would support Harris. He will be the nominee if Biden withdraws from the election.

The Biden campaign did not respond to a request for comment from Fox News Digital.
