When New York Yankees manager Aaron Boone ejected his players from a national anthem altercation at the start of Thursday’s series finale against the Cincinnati Reds, it seemed like a sign of things to come.
The Reds took an early 2-0 lead on homers from Nick Martini and Jonathan India, then Spencer Steer hit a three-run homer in the fifth inning, all of which came from Yankees starter Marcus Stroman, to extend the lead to 5-0.

New York got two runs back in the bottom of the fifth on home runs from Austin Wells and Ben Rice, and Juan Soto also homered in the seventh, but the damage was already done.
Cincinnati ultimately won, 8-4, shutting out the Yankees.
But before the Reds could celebrate, Yankees fans gave them a thumping.

In the top of the ninth, Reds hitter Jeimer Candalerio hit a bland ball toward center field, Yankees outfielder Trent Grisham was slow to catch the ball but dropped it while trying to throw it back to the infield, and Candalerio made a smart move and advanced to second base.
Boos rained down from Yankees fans who had seen the team lose almost everything since the series finale against the Atlanta Braves in June.
Grisham was called out for an error, but it added to a bad day for Bronx fans.

The Yankees fell to 54-35 with Thursday’s loss. The Reds improved to 42-25.
