Cases of plague have been found in Colorado. Health officials say.
Details about the victims, including their ages, genders, medical conditions and how they contracted the potentially deadly infection, have not yet been released.
Authorities said the accident was reported in Pueblo County, south of Colorado Springs.
Resident Died of the plague Health officials say the disease is rare in the United States, typically with fewer than 17 cases per year, but an outbreak occurred last fall in Archuleta County in southwestern Colorado.
“During the Middle Ages, the plague was called the ‘Black Death’ as it ravaged Europe and killed millions of people,” the Pueblo County Health Department said. It says on the websiteHe noted that the horror left many of the victims with black, rotting spots on their bodies.
“Today, the menace has decreased due to improved hygiene practices and rodent control,” the ministry said.
This notorious bacterial infection is often transmitted to humans by rodents and their fleas.
Symptoms include fever, chills, swollen lymph nodes, and headache.
Officials say the disease can be treated with antibiotics if detected early.
