CNN media analyst says Biden’s upcoming ABC interview not ‘enough,’ needs multiple ‘unscripted’ appearances

Sarah Fischer, a senior media analyst at CNN and senior media reporter at Axios, argued at the network on Thursday that the upcoming ABC interview won’t be enough to restore President Biden’s reputation among the American public following last week’s debate.

Biden’s performance at the CNN presidential debate left some Democrats worried about his chances of beating former President Trump in November’s presidential election. The president’s appearances and gaffes have continued to stoke public anger over his job performance, leading many of his most ardent supporters to call for him to step down or prove he is capable of leadership.

Biden is scheduled to appear in a post-debate interview with ABC News’ George Stephanopoulos on Friday, but Fischer argued he needs to do more if he wants to reassure voters.

Liberal newspapers, Biden media alliance urge president to drop out of race: ‘His arrogance is infuriating’

“One of the things the president is trying to make is, ‘Instead of watching this 90-minute debate, watch my three and a half years,'” Fischer said. “The challenge also works in reverse. If you don’t want us to believe what we saw, you can give us multiple examples of where you could have a live, unscripted interview and we’ll see that this was a one-off, if that’s your argument.”

The reporter then went on to specifically discuss why the widely anticipated interview between Biden and Stephanopoulos will not satisfy the American public.

“The challenge they face now is that the ABC News interview is not enough. They need to show and demonstrate that he can do this repeatedly and unscripted,” Fisher said. “I can’t stress this enough.”

The reporter cited several examples of Biden’s appearances, but these will not be enough to restore his reputation on the American political stage.

“You know, a rally in Raleigh is not going to convince the American people that he has this under control. A press conference with a teleprompter is not going to convince the American people,” she said. “He needs to be interviewed in a spontaneous moment, where he’s being asked live questions, and then we’ll see if he’s really agile.”
