Former California senator slams lawmakers 'pushing out' Biden: 'Please spare me your five minutes of fame'

Former California Sen. Barbara Boxer (D) on Thursday slammed lawmakers who called on President Biden to drop out of the race after last week’s presidential debate with former President Trump.

“I don’t agree with lawmakers who are going on TV seeking their five minutes of fame and trying to get rid of one of the greatest presidents since Franklin Roosevelt,” Boxer said in an interview with CNN.

Boxer previously told Los Angeles Times columnist Mark Barabac that the president should have two weeks to prove to the American people that he is worthy of the presidency and that his shaky debate performance was a fluke.

“There are two schools of thought. My idea is to stage a comeback,” Boxer told CNN.

She called Trump, Biden’s Republican opponent in the November election, a “real threat.”

While the party has largely maintained its public support for Biden even after the White House acknowledged his debate performance was “poor,” some party members have broken with the establishment and urged the president not to seek reelection.

Reps. Lloyd Doggett (D-Texas) and Raul Grijalva (D-Arizona) publicly called on Biden to drop out of the race earlier this week.

A third Democrat, Rep. Seth Moulton of Massachusetts, said Thursday that the president should step down “so new leadership can rise.”

“Please spare me my five minutes of fame,” Boxer said. “Give this guy a chance to bounce back. He’s done it so many times.”
