Important Events
I found some lovely pieces by Paolini on the internet. She anticipated the drop shot well, showed a delicate touch with a volley to win the point, then followed up with a stunning volley on the next point.
Andreescu’s early momentum seemed to have halted, but then when the pressure came on at 15-40, bang, bang, back-to-back aces followed.
Daria Kasatkina vs Paola Badosa The women’s singles is taking place on Court 3. Meanwhile, Paolini holds serve for the first time in the match. The score for this year’s French Open finalist is 2-1.
It’s easy to forget Andreescu She was just 19 when she beat Serena Williams in the 2019 US Open final. She’s never made it past the third round at Wimbledon, but judging by the opening game, this could be a classic. Paolini did her best to take it to deuce, then had a break point, but Andrees pushed it into the net. Break back! 1-1
Andreescu’s powerful groundstrokes The Italian serves to get to 15-40, then the Canadian relentlessly hits a high second serve, hitting it down the line to break in the opening game. Amazing.
The blue sky comes into view It’s been spotted over the All England Club, but don’t quote me on that one.
We’re ready to rock and roll with number 1. Paolini will serve first.
After rain, play is due to get underway on the outdoor court at 1pm (BST). But there was chaos in the center and on court 1, where Jasmine Paolini and Bianca Andreescu had just entered the court and, after a brief pep talk from the umpire, were now getting up.
This should be a good match: Paolini is in top form and a very likeable, even phenomenal, player, while Andreescu has made an impressive comeback after several years of injury.
Andy Murray produced one of the most memorable and emotional final matches on Thursday night. But his tournament isn’t over yet, with a practice scheduled for Friday and a possible mixed doubles match with Emma Raducanu on Saturday.
Murray was in tears as he reminisced with Sue Barker after watching a montage of the most memorable moments of his career, with tributes from the likes of Roger Federer, Rafael Nadal, Novak Djokovic and Venus Williams.
“It was really nice,” Murray said. “My head was spinning while the video was playing. I knew I had to speak soon. Those moments are hard because there are so many people I want to thank and talk to. I got pretty emotional. It was nice to watch the video, but it was hard for me because it’s the end of something I’ve loved doing for a long time.
“But it’s really good that a lot of the players stayed. I’m very close and have good relationships with the British players that were there but there were some players on the court that I have a lot of respect for – they’re some of the greatest players in the history of the game. It feels like the end for me. I don’t know if I deserved it, but they did a really, really good job.”
The crackers begin on Court 1 at 1pmFans will also be entertained by seventh seed Jasmine Paolini taking on Bianca Andreescu, followed by Grigor Dimitrov taking on Gael Monfils, before rounding out the action in the biggest match of Sonay Kartaru’s career, with the Briton taking on second seed Coco Gauff.
From one of our SW19 team members…
Heavy rain is falling again at Wimbledon. The regime has changed but something depressingly familiar remains
