Gregg Berhalter’s USMNT future will be decided next week

Gregg Berhalter’s tenure as coach of the U.S. men’s national team may be coming to an end.

Fox Sports reported that Matt Crocker, sporting director for the United States Soccer Federation, Expected to make a decision An announcement about Berhalter’s future will be made by the middle of next week.

This comes after the Copa America, where the United States, host of the prestigious tournament, failed to even get out of the group stage despite entering the tournament ranked 11th in the world and third among the teams competing, behind Argentina and Brazil.

But this ranking is at least somewhat controversial.

The U.S. only managed to beat Bolivia in the group stage, then lost to Panama and Uruguay, both of which they needed to win to have a chance to advance to the knockout stage.

In a statement, Crocker committed the program to conducting “a comprehensive review of our performance in the Copa America and how best to improve our team and results leading up to the 2026 World Cup.”

He later added: “Our performance in the tournament fell short of expectations…we have to work harder.”

This will be the first time the U.S. national team has participated in the Copa America since 2016.

They also hosted the tournament, finishing in fourth place, tying their highest finish in Copa history.

This comes a year after failing in the less prestigious Gold Cup, contested only by CONCACAF teams excluding South American nations.

The U.S. men’s national team, which has won six of the past 11 Gold Cups since 2002, finished fourth in last year’s tournament, its worst performance since 2000.

They also hosted the tournament and lost to Panama in the semifinals in San Diego.
