Search for Lake Michigan missing boaters resumes

The search for two boaters who went missing on Lake Michigan in northwest Indiana on Friday will resume Saturday morning, local authorities said.

The search was called off late Friday as night fell, and the Indiana Department of Natural Resources told Fox News Digital that weather conditions in the area were hampering search efforts because of high winds and waves.

The two men were on a boat with 10 other passengers, including adults and children, about 2.5 miles off Whiting on Lake Michigan at about 2:30 p.m., when one of the men jumped off the boat to swim but began to resist. Fox 32 Chicago I will report.

The group tried to move their boat closer to him but high winds and waves made it impossible to reach him, after which a second man jumped into the water to try and rescue the first swimmer.

However, the second man also got into difficulty and a third man wearing a life jacket went underwater but was later separated from the other two men.

The man, who was wearing a life jacket, was rescued by the Coast Guard at about 4:30 p.m. and taken to hospital with mild hypothermia but has since been released.

One of the missing men is from Elk Grove Village and the other is from Mount Prospect.

Also on Friday, a man and a teenage girl were rescued from Lake Michigan at Pere Marquette Park in Muskegon, about 45 miles northwest of Grand Rapids, WWMT reported.

The first person to be found was a teenage boy, initially unresponsive but responsive by 6pm on Friday. Rescuers were unable to locate him for some time, but he was pulled to shore and given CPR. Local reports said the boy’s condition was critical.

On Thursday, the Coast Guard rescued two children and two adults after a boat capsized off the coast of Galveston, Texas.

When the Coast Guard arrived on scene, they found four people clinging to the capsized boat – two children were wearing life jackets, but two adults were not.

They were safely transported to shore and there were no reports of injuries, the Coast Guard said.
