New styles range from super chic knee-length suit shorts to sleek tailored styles in office-friendly pinstripes, so you can wear shorts to the workplace too. George at Asda’s chalk-striped black linen shorts (£12) are a great place to start, or Me & Em’s tailored black shorts (£175) will pair well with a waistcoat, another hot summer item. Pair it with a blazer, belt and loafers to pull the whole look together.

If knee-length shorts aren’t your usual fashion staple, a look at the runway shows might make you think otherwise. Steal styling tips from the catwalk: at Marques’ Almeida, navy taffeta shorts were teamed with a matching oversized shirt and strappy heels, while in the evening, at Carven, they were teamed with a shirt and statement earrings, and at Chanel (left), denim was teamed with a smart bouclé jacket. An all-white summer staple that always works, even in the heat, is an all-white look. Team a white shirt with Reformation’s longline linen Liam shorts (£148), paired with fisherman sandals and white socks during the day, and a vest and mesh ballet pumps in the evening.
