South Carolina man dead after lighting firework on top of his head before it explodes

A South Carolina man was killed when a firework he lit above his head for “show-off” on Independence Day exploded, authorities said.

According to the Dorchester County Sheriff’s Office, Allen Ray McGrew, 41, was on a residential street at 10:20 p.m. Thursday when he placed a large “pyrotechnic device” above his head and ignited it. According to WSB-TV.

“The explosive detonated above his head, causing severe head injuries,” the sheriff’s office said.

McGrew was pronounced dead at the scene in Summerville, South Carolina.

According to an incident report from the Dorchester County Sheriff’s Office, the man was “showing off” fireworks by placing them on his head. FOX TV Station report.

According to the report, McGrew’s wife told police they were at a neighborhood party on the Fourth of July and that her husband had been drinking alcohol in the hours before the crash. She said she saw him with a firework on his head to “show off.”

When the fireworks went off, McGrew’s wife told him to stop and witnesses saw him collapse, according to the report.

Independence Day is McGrew’s favorite holiday, his wife said. The Post and Courierreported that the fireworks used in the incident were legal.
