Bernie Sanders urges people to focus on policy, not age when discussing Biden re-election

Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-Vt.) said Sunday that President Biden performed “terribly” in the debate with former President Trump, but that he has spoken with Biden recently and continues to support him in his re-election bid.

At 82, Sanders is older than Biden but said there should be more to look at than age, despite growing concerns from both parties about the president’s mental health.

“Biden is old,” Sanders told host Robert Costa about the 81-year-old president. “He’s not as eloquent as he used to be. I wish I could jump up the steps of Air Force One, but I can’t. We have to focus on policies that have benefited and will benefit the vast majority of people in this country.”

The senator said he believes Americans want a president who has the “courage to stand up for corporate America” - someone who will expand Medicare, increase and extend Social Security benefits, and discuss “a permanent child tax credit to reduce child poverty in America by 50 percent.”

Sanders said 60% of Americans run out of money before payday and 25% of “elderly people” try to survive on less than $15,000 a year.

“The American people want four years of policies that address the needs of this country’s working class,” Sanders said. “He has to say, ‘I’m ready to stand up to corporate greed, to stand up to gross income and wealth inequality, and to stand with the working class of this country.’ If he does that, he’s going to win, and he’s going to win big.”
