Sen. J.D. Vance (R-Ohio) said Sunday he believes it would be “totally reasonable” for former President Trump to investigate President Biden, the Republican front-runner, if he wins a second term in the White House this November.
In an interview on NBC News’ “Meet the Press,” Vance was responding to footage of Trump vowing last year to “appoint a real special counsel to go after the most corrupt president in the history of the United States of America, Joe Biden, and the Biden crime family.”
Vance, who is considered a leading candidate to be Trump’s running mate, downplayed the significance of Trump’s threats and said the media was giving excessive attention to his comments.
“Donald Trump is talking about appointing a special counsel to investigate Joe Biden’s wrongdoing,” Vance said in response to the video. “All Donald Trump is saying is that the previous administration should be investigated.”
He accused Biden of doing “exactly that for the last few years,” saying, “I think it’s entirely reasonable for Donald Trump to say, ‘Look, let’s do the basic job of investigating wrongdoing.'”
“And frankly, the Biden administration has done far worse. So if you think what Donald Trump is proposing is a threat to democracy, isn’t what Biden has already done a greater threat to our system of law and our system of government?” Vance said.
Attorney General Merrick Garland appointed special counsel Jack Smith to investigate Trump’s efforts to overturn the results of the 2020 election. He ultimately brought two charges against Trump, one relating to the election and the other to withholding classified documents and obstructing government recovery efforts.
There is no evidence to suggest Biden or the Democrats are directing the actions of the Department of Justice. The Department of Justice was also involved in the recent prosecution of two Democrats, Sen. Bob Menendez of New Jersey and Rep. Henry Cuellar of Texas. A special counsel from the Department of Justice also recently won a conviction against the president’s son, Hunter Biden.
