Viktor Orban attends NATO summit in Washington
Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban will attend the NATO summit in Washington this week, Hungarian government officials have confirmed.
The Hungarian leader said on Monday he would travel to Washington after discussions in Beijing about China’s Ukraine peace plan.
Hungary is at odds with other Western countries over Orban’s continued close ties with Russia and his refusal to send arms to Ukraine.
The NATO summit will be a focus of attention from diplomats and reporters, who are hoping to hear military announcements on supporting Kiev and find out who Donald Trump’s running mate will be in the US presidential elections.
German Minister of Defence, Boris Pistoriussaid it has received “significantly less” than it requested as part of the department’s 2025 budget.
Pistorius had sought to increase annual defence spending by 6.7 billion euros ($7.25 billion) to 2025. Neither he nor the government would comment on how much he would receive.
“This is annoying for me because it means I can’t quickly start doing certain things depending on the ‘Zeitenwende’ and the threat situation,” Pistorius said.
Days after Russia invaded Ukraine in 2022, Chancellor Olaf Scholz announced the creation of a special fund of 100 billion euros to boost the military’s capabilities.
“We have to adapt to it and make the most of it,” Pistorius said of the 2025 defence budget.

The Chinese leader told the visiting Prime Minister Orban that countries around the world should support the resumption of direct peace talks between Russia and Ukraine, state broadcaster CCTV reported.
“The international community should create conditions and provide support for the two sides to resume direct dialogue and negotiations,” Xi told Orban, adding that “only when all major powers exert positive, instead of negative, energy can the dawn of a ceasefire in this conflict come as soon as possible.”
China, which has close ties with Russia, has been promoting a six-point peace plan it jointly announced with Brazil in May, while Orban has launched a so-called “peace mission” since Brazil took over the EU’s rotating presidency earlier this month.
Orban’s visit, which came after he met with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky in Kiev and visited the Kremlin, drew strong condemnation from allies.
