Biden goes against Democrat critics and releases a lengthy statement, saying ‘I am firmly committed to staying in this race’

President Joe Biden released a lengthy statement reiterating his intention to brush aside criticism and speculation about whether he will challenge former President Donald Trump in the presidential election, a move that comes as a growing number of Democrats call for the president to step aside and hand the reins to someone else.

Biden’s statement began with, “Despite all the speculation in the press and elsewhere, I want you to know that I remain in this race, I fight to the end, and I am determined to defeat Trump.”

After Biden’s disastrous debate defeat against Trump late last month, many Democrats have grown disheartened by the president’s mental acuity. Rob Reiner recently appeared on X and said it was time for Democrats to “stop fooling around,” hinting at the arrival of a long-awaited presidential candidate who has a better chance of standing up to the opposition.

“Any weakening of resolve or lack of clarity about the agenda ahead will only help Trump and hurt us.”

Reiner’s views were echoed by Abigail Disney, granddaughter of Roy Disney, co-founder of The Walt Disney Company, who said she would not make any cash donations to the Democratic Party until Biden dropped out of the presidential race.

“Unless they replace Biden as the top candidate, I will cease all donations to the party. This is reality and no disrespect. Biden is a good man and has served the country well, but the stakes are too high,” she said.

“If Biden doesn’t step down, the Democrats will lose. I’m absolutely certain of that,” she added. “The consequences of a defeat would be truly devastating.”

Despite calls for the president to give his candidacy to someone else, Trump said in the letter, “I hear the concerns people have – their sincere fears and anxieties about what is at stake. I also know that these concerns come from genuine respect for my career in public service and my record as President. And I have been touched by the expressions of affection for me from so many of those who have come to know and support me throughout my career in public service.”

“I can answer all of this clearly and without question: If I didn’t absolutely believe I was the best person to beat Donald Trump in 2024, I would not be running again.”

The statement also reiterated that no one else has received as much support within the Democratic Party as Biden, noting, “I have received more than 14 million votes, or 87 percent of the votes cast throughout the nominating process. I have approximately 3,900 delegates and am the party’s presumptive nominee by a wide margin.”

He also said that while Trump sides with “the wealthy and big corporations,” the Biden administration is focused on “the American worker.”

The letter did not address the issues many Democrats have with Biden, but reiterated the president’s policies, noting, “From health care to prescription drugs to student loans to housing, we are the ones who are helping families afford it. We are the ones who are protecting Social Security and Medicare. Everything they propose to do would increase the burden on most Americans, except for tax cuts that go straight to the wealthy.”

The letter ended by calling for Democratic unity, saying, “Any weakening of resolve or lack of clarity about the agenda ahead will only help Trump and hurt us. Now is the time to unite, move forward as a party, and defeat Donald Trump.”
