Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban said on Monday he would be in Beijing to discuss China’s Ukraine peace plan before heading to Washington.
Hungary began its six-month EU presidency in July with a call to “Make Europe Great Again” from former U.S. President Donald Trump, an ally of Orban and a fierce critic of the EU.
Since then, Orban has visited Kiev, Moscow and Beijing on what he called a “peace mission” to Ukraine’s war.

Trump’s latest visit to China comes just days before a NATO summit to discuss further aid for Ukraine and after the European Commission confirmed last week that it would impose tariffs on imports of Chinese-made electric vehicles.

Orban, a nationalist who supports Trump’s return to the White House, met with Trump in Florida in March but there are no signs yet that they will meet again.

The Hungarian government did not immediately respond to questions about details of the U.S. visit, which was announced on its social media accounts.
Orban has refused to send arms to Kiev and has maintained close economic ties with Moscow since Russian troops invaded Ukraine in 2022. He met with Russian President Vladimir Putin last Friday.
