ABC’s George Stephanopoulos after Biden interview: ‘I don’t think he can serve four more years’

Just days after the high-profile interview, ABC News host George Stephanopoulos made it clear that he doesn’t think Biden can hold onto four more years in office.

“I don’t believe he can serve another four years,” Stephanopoulos responded.

White House press secretary Andrew Bates pointed Fox News Digital to comments made by White House press secretary Karine Jean-Pierre at a press conference on Tuesday. Jean-Pierre told Fox News’ Peter Doocy that the president intends to serve out a second term. The Biden campaign did not immediately respond to Fox News Digital’s request for comment.

An ABC News spokesperson told Fox News Digital that “George was expressing his own views, not the position of ABC News.”

“Today I answered a question from a passerby. I should not have done so,” Governor Stephanopoulos said through a spokesman.

Stephanopoulos gave his first national interview with Biden since his disastrous debate performance last month, which sparked unprecedented calls among members of the media and even among Democrats for him to withdraw from the 2024 presidential race.

The ABC interview was widely seen as a test of whether Biden was mentally fit to run for reelection, but the 22-minute interview did nothing to ease tensions within the party.

Biden repeatedly dodged questions about whether he would undergo a neurological exam, saying, “Nobody’s saying I have to.”

Questioned about whether he watched the debate on CNN, Biden raised eyebrows when he told Stephanopoulos, “I don’t think I did.”

President Trump shocked the nation by refusing to take a cognitive ability test after repeatedly claiming that as commander in chief he takes one every day.

Biden also infuriated Democrats by saying he would be satisfied if he lost to former President Trump as long as he “tried his hardest.” [his] all.”

“While Biden certainly looked better and more consistent than he did in the debate, there was nothing in this interview that would calm the nerves of nervous Democrats who worry that Joe Biden is on a trajectory to lose this race, to lose to Donald Trump,” ABC News Washington bureau chief Jonathan Karl told Stephanopoulos in reaction to the interview on Friday.

“In fact, for some people, this interview raises new concerns, particularly the fact that he’s in a dire situation in terms of the campaign, that he doesn’t want or doesn’t know that in the view of many Democrats and frankly in the polls that you cited, he’s losing to Donald Trump,” he said.

Several members of the media, notably the editorial board of The New York Times, have called on Biden to drop out of the 2024 presidential race, while Democrats are split on whether to support the 81-year-old president.
