The House passed a bill Wednesday that would expand proof of citizenship requirements to vote in federal elections and require states to purge their voter rolls.
The Protecting Voter Eligibility for American Voters (SAVE) Act passed the House in a vote of 221-198, with five Democrats voting in favor of the Republican version of the bill.
Rep. Chip Roy (R-Texas) introduced the bill. Breitbart News Daily In June, he said there was “repeated evidence” that foreigners had voted.
“Let me just say this about the whole election situation,” Roy said. “We have repeated evidence that illegal immigrants, or people who are legal immigrants but don’t have citizenship, are voting.”

If the bill becomes law, state election officials would be unable to register people to vote in federal elections unless they can prove they are American citizens.
“The foreign vote is a threat to the integrity of our elections,” said House Speaker Mike Johnson (R-Louisiana). Said In a policy brief on the bill.
Rep. Ashley Hinson (R-Iowa) said in a statement after the bill passed:
Voting is a sacred right for Americans and illegal immigrants should not be denied the opportunity to vote in our elections. The Biden Administration has allowed millions of illegal immigrants into our country and we must ensure that they cannot register to vote and influence our elections. It says everything you need to know that the Biden Administration opposes this common sense effort and seeks to keep our southern border wide open and maintain loopholes that allow illegal immigrants to vote. I will continue to fight to maintain the integrity of our elections and prevent illegal immigrants from voting.
“Allowing non-citizens to vote is outrageous and un-American. It encourages illegal immigration, supports Biden’s open borders policy, and most importantly, it undermines the Constitution and the right of Americans to choose their representatives,” Rep. Jody Arrington (R-Texas) said in a statement. “Only American citizens have the sacred right to vote in U.S. elections.”
A 2022 YouGov poll found that 65% of Americans support requiring proof of citizenship to vote in elections, including 48% of Democrats, 62% of swing voters, and 88% of Republicans.
The bill now heads to the Senate, where it is expected to be sponsored by bill sponsor Sen. Mike Lee (R-Utah).
