House Speaker Mike Johnson (R-Louisiana) has called on President Joe Biden’s Cabinet to consider invoking the 25th Amendment to the Constitution to remove Biden from office.
The 25th Amendment passed after the assassination of John F. Kennedy outline The important process of presidential succession and what happens if the president becomes incapacitated and can no longer perform his duties.
“There is a time for every purpose under heaven; desperate times call for desperate measures.”
Section 4 read:
Whenever the Vice President and a majority of the principal officers of the executive department, or such other body as Congress may by law, transmit to the President pro tempore of the Senate and the Speaker of the House of Representatives their written declaration that the President is unable to discharge the powers and duties of his office, the Vice President shall immediately assume the powers and duties of the office as Acting President.
Johnson said Tuesday he believes most Americans would agree that the Biden administration should seriously consider invoking the 25th Amendment against the president.
“I can say without any compunction that if I were part of the Biden administration, I would address that issue, because we all know Joe Biden is not up to the job and he’s in danger,” Johnson said. Said.
“There is a time for every purpose under heaven. Dire times call for dire measures. I think the 25th Amendment is appropriate here,” he continued.
“Everybody knows the House of Representatives does not have that authority. It’s the vice president of the United States who has to start that process,” he explained. “Unless there’s a disagreement between the president and the vice president and the Cabinet’s decision, we don’t get involved.”
Johnson added that, regardless of his own views, he was “under no illusions” that Vice President Kamala Harris or the Cabinet would actually invoke the 25th Amendment.
It is interesting that so few people are discussing the 25th Amendment in this context.
Not only has the 25th Amendment been weaponized repeatedly during Donald Trump’s presidency, but the fact that a significant number of Americans, including Democrats, believe Biden should not run for reelection raises an important question: If Biden can’t serve another four years as president, is he fit for the office? right now?
In any case, Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen Confirmed on Tuesday The Biden Cabinet is not considering invoking the 25th Amendment.
Still, House Republicans Can pass resolutions Harris calls for action Just like Democrats did with then-Vice President Mike Pence. The riots at the U.S. Capitol on January 6th.
But it is not clear whether Johnson intends to take any more symbolic steps.
