Coons shuts down speculation about Pelosi’s Biden comments: she is ‘capable of speaking clearly’

Sen. Chris Coons (D-Delaware) denied speculation about comments made by former Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) about whether President Biden should leave office.

Coons, a Biden aide, discussed the president’s political future with CNN’s Caitlin Collins on Wednesday night, nearly two weeks after his lackluster debate performance but with concerns remaining.

Earlier in the day, House Speaker Nancy Pelosi said it was “up to Biden to decide whether to run” and that Democrats “all encourage that decision.”

Her comments have been called into question since Biden sent a letter to Democratic lawmakers on Monday, flatly rejecting calls for her to resign.

Coons said he doesn’t believe his colleagues are saying they want Biden to make a different decision.

“I think Nancy Pelosi is perfectly capable of speaking up if she thinks he should make a different decision,” he said.

Kuhn said the former speaker was “one of the most capable and agile politicians” he had ever met, and rejected the idea that there was any subliminal message in her comments.

“If she wants to get a message directly to the president, I think she knows how to do that,” he said.

Coons went on to say she believes Pelosi was addressing the concerns of voters across the country who believe Biden cannot beat former President Trump in this fall’s election and therefore cannot serve another four years in office if re-elected.

The president continues to campaign and insists he intends to win.

“There’s been a lot of public, casual conversation about what happens next. He’s made his decision. He’s communicated it to all of us,” Coons said, later adding, “It’s clear what’s going to happen next… He’s going to be our nominee at the convention. He’s going to be our presidential nominee… He’s going to be the next president of the United States.”
