Before the final volcano erupts in front of the Mirage on the Las Vegas Strip, the resort’s casino must pay out $1.6 million to gamblers.
Currently, Mirage is “Progressive Finale Cash Giveaway” The hotel will remain open until July 16th, when it will close for good. It will then be renamed Hard Rock Hotel & Casino and Guitar Hotel Las Vegas and is scheduled to open in 2027.
Those hoping to win can play a variety of table games and slot machines. Why is that required? Because of Nevada’s progressive jackpot law, casinos must pay out all jackpots before closing, KABC-TV reported.

The funds must be distributed before the casino can stop gaming operations. FOX 5 Las Vegas reported.
The Mirage has been an iconic part of the Strip for decades, since it opened as the first major resort in 1989. Its success sparked a construction boom of other large resorts in the 1990s, forever changing the way business was done in this popular destination.
When it opened, the Mirage was the most expensive resort in the world., Opened by developer Steve Wynn at a cost of $630 million, it was Wynn’s first major casino on the Strip.

“Over the coming weeks, we will be looking back at The Mirage’s history as we prepare for a new era,” the Mirage wrote on its Facebook page on July 1, inviting patrons to share photos of their favorite memories.
Many said they will miss the hotel and casino and are against closing it, even going so far as to say they will miss the atrium and grounds surrounding the casino.
“I’ve stayed at the amazing Mirage many times since 1990,” one Facebook user replied to the Mirage post. “My favorite LV hotel/casino!”

“I’ve tried other hotels and resorts along the Strip but always come back to the Mirage,” said one Facebook user, who cited the first resort she stayed at in Las Vegas 20 years ago. “I felt like I was at home. From the valets and bell service employees to the housekeeping, food service and casino staff, I was always treated exceptionally well.”
Hard Rock International said the closures will result in the layoffs of more than 3,000 employees and that it plans to pay $80 million in severance packages.
