Star Wars: The Acolyte is a complete and utter disaster.
The new “Star Wars” spinoff series is being created by Leslye Headland for Disney+ and will turn the beloved world built by George Lucas upside down.
“The creators of the show have actually been given interviews to try and do damage control and defend the show and justify the fact that they’re doing something that’s essentially 180 degrees different from what Star Wars fans know and expect from the series,” Lauren Chen explains.
The show cost $180 million to make, with Cheng noting that “each episode had a budget larger than the budget of one entire Godzilla film.”
While Star Wars fans know the Jedi as the good guys, the series is now trying to portray them as unjust authoritarian space patriarchs trying to suppress the oppressed space-witch lesbians of the universe.
“I think it’s always good to show different perspectives, whether it’s in entertainment or the real world, or frankly real politics and history, but in this series, the Jedi are portrayed as bad guys who are actually doing bad things and engaging in bad behavior,” Chen explains.
“So it’s more than just, ‘Oh, I’m trying to represent a different point of view,'” she added.
Headland argued that the series is a “morally grey story”, but Cheng doesn’t think that quite achieves that.
“Morally grey works are something any good writer can write, but I feel like these writers are missing nuance. I think it actually takes tact and skill to write something morally ambiguous, and these writers are failing at best,” she explains.
Instead of a successful narrative shift, Chen says, what “Star Wars” fans got was “Leslye Headland and her DEI crew.”
Headland’s wife, Rebecca Henderson, also played the alien Vernestra on the show, but Chen described her as “the worst actress on the show.”
“So if you’re wondering how on earth she ended up in this nepotism role, that’s it,” Chen says.
