Yankees call up Jorbit Vivas with JD Davis headed to IL

BALTIMORE — The Yankees will be researching an intriguing infield prospect.

The team announced that Jorbit Bivas was promoted from Triple-A on Friday and will join the roster in time for the series against the Orioles at Camden Yards.

With J.D. Davis on the disabled list with gastroenteritis, Vivas got his chance.

The 23-year-old left-hander, Bivas, was hitting .258 with an .828 OPS in 37 games with Scranton/Wilkes-Barre but has been on a roll lately, hitting .333 with a 1.113 OPS and five home runs in his final 19 games.

Davis has barely appeared in a game since the Yankees acquired him from the Athletics, going just 15 at-bats with one hit and two walks in 13 at-bats.

But it’s unlikely the Yankees would promote Bivas just to have him sit on the bench.

He could platoon at second or third base with Gleyber Torres and DJ LeMahieu, who have struggled overall offensively this year.

LeMahieu was hit in the throat by a bouncing foul ball on Wednesday, but manager Aaron Boone said Thursday that the veteran is expected to return to the lineup on Friday.

Vivas was acquired from the Dodgers along with relief pitcher Victor Gonzalez, who was designated for assignment last December, and made a strong first impression on the team, showing off his batting skills and power during major league camp.

He suffered a fractured left orbital bone in a pre-game injury on the final day of camp, delaying his start to the season.

He returned to play in two games in late April, then spent another 20 minutes on the disabled list with injury complications, but made a full recovery by late May.
