Jesse Marsh quickly closed the door.
That’s not the case now, and probably never will be the case.
The American-born coach currently coaches the Canadian national team, while the U.S. men’s national team currently has a head coaching position vacant after firing head coach Gregg Berhalter earlier this week.
“I have no intention of leaving this position,” Marsh said Friday. “I’m not interested in working in the United States.”
After losing to Argentina in the semifinal at MetLife Stadium on Tuesday night, Marsh and Canada will face Uruguay in the third-place match of the 2024 Copa America on Saturday at Bank of America Stadium in Charlotte, North Carolina.
Marsh’s name has long been floated as a possible coach for the U.S. men’s national team, given his experience in the U.S. with the MLS Red Bulls and his reputation as a top-level manager with Leeds in England, Red Bull Leipzig in Germany and Red Bull Salzburg in Austria.
Marsh, 50, interviewed for the vacant head coaching job of the U.S. men’s national team in December 2022 after Berhalter’s contract expires, but the U.S. Soccer Federation opted to bring Berhalter back on a new contract.
Marsh, a native of Racine, Wisconsin, slammed the USMNT and USSF in May for his experience interviewing for the position, saying “I wasn’t treated very well.”
He quickly found success after that, leading Canada to the semi-finals in their first Copa America appearance.
Meanwhile, coach Berhalter failed to get out of the group stage with the U.S. men’s national team, making the host country the first in the tournament’s history to be eliminated in the group stage.

He was then fired on Wednesday.
“And to be fair, unless there’s a major change in the organization, I don’t think I’d be interested in this job in the future,” Marsh said. “So I’m really happy here. I couldn’t be happier working with the leadership of this organization and working with this team.”
Before Canada’s semifinal loss, Marsh raved about his work with the team.
“I’m at a point in my life where I don’t need any other bullshit,” Marsh said Monday. “I want to do what I want to do. I want to fall in love with the game I love again. This team has helped me find that and I’m very grateful.”
