HBO host Bill Maher aired a segment Friday night semi-condemning Biden’s potential successors, specifically blasting Vice President Harris and California’s Democratic governor, Gavin Newsom.
On the latest episode of “Real Time with Bill Maher,” the host declared “Biden is over” before running through a list of potential replacements, listing their pros and cons. Harris and Newsom received Maher’s harshest criticism, and the host revealed why they’re unlikely to make it to the White House.
“Harris has never been popular. You could count the number of delegates she won in the 2020 primaries on one hand if you didn’t have fingers on them,” Maher joked.

Maher began his speech by telling Democrats to “stop kidding around” and replace Biden, saying “he will not be the Democratic nominee in 2024.”
“Biden is finished,” the comedian said, before listing off a list of possible replacements for Biden, starting with Harris.
“She doesn’t just defend Plan B, she is Plan B,” Maher said, joking about her pro-abortion credentials.
The host noted Harris’ appeal as a diverse candidate, saying, “Harris would be the first woman president, the first Black woman president, the first Asian American president,” but was quick to downplay those distinctions, saying, “But I’m not voting for who’s going to be first, I’m voting for who’s going to win.”
Maher then pointed to her unpopularity in the election, quipping that her time as vice president was “quieter than an electric car.” He then mocked her again, adding, “It’s not fair that she’s unpopular. She’s smart, she’s competent, she was put in charge of border control, and look what she’s doing, she’s a bad example.”

The HBO host then introduced Newsom as “the only governor, other than Kristi Noem, who could be in a porno,” and joked that Newsom is so eager to replace Biden that “you get a notification on your phone every time Biden can’t think of something to say.”
Maher then harshly criticized Governor Newsom over the state’s homelessness problem, saying, “You’re going to get attacked for homelessness in California, but there’s a counterargument: Homeless people can live anywhere, but they’re choosing California.”
“Nine out of 10 machete-wielding methamphetamine addicts say they wouldn’t be displaced anywhere else.”
In contrast to his treatment of Harris, Maher heartily praised Newsom before discussing the other candidates, saying, “Newsom is one of the best communicators in our party and has a history of standing up to bullies. His name fits the best slogan since ‘We Love Ike,’ ‘We’ve Got Gavin.'”
The host then listed other potential replacements, including Michigan Governor Gretchen Whitmer (Democrat) and Transportation Secretary Buttigieg, but made few jokes about them other than saying the latter is “only 10” and “checks all the boxes for a liberal gay best friend.”
