Jessica Buchanan was caught off guard when her fiancé called off their expensive wedding just weeks before the date.
Based in Toronto Makeup Artist The content creator had splashed out on a $5,000 dress, put thousands more toward a down payment, and was eagerly planning for what was supposed to be the happiest day of her life.
Then her future husband, Adam, whose name has been changed for anonymity, called off the engagement.
“He couldn’t give me any specific reasons, he just kept saying how awful he felt and how much he hated doing this,” she recalled. Sun“I knew our relationship was over.”
Buchanan and her ex-husband met while in college in 2010 and were friends for five years before finally officially dating. Buchanan said their relationship was nearly perfect overall and they never argued.
“But as the years went by, I sometimes asked myself, ‘Is this what it feels like to find the one?'” she said.
Adam proposed in 2022 with an extravagant arrangement: he filled a warehouse with candles, made a heart out of flowers, and played Taylor Swift’s “Love Story” at full volume in the background like a “scene from a movie.”
“I’d never really wanted marriage, but knowing how much Adam loves me and how much effort he’s put in was the best feeling in the world,” she continued.
“But the euphoria didn’t last long. From the start, Adam didn’t seem interested in planning the wedding. I thought that was normal and, as a creative person, I was all in for it.”
She booked a converted conservatory that could accommodate 130 guests, chose “five themed buffets,” and paid a $5,000 deposit.
“But as everything was going well, I felt something was wrong,” she says. “Adam and I started arguing, which we’d never done before. I loved him deeply and wanted him to be happy.”
As Adam assured her that it would be OK, she “doubled down on planning” and tried to push aside her “worries,” she recalled.
Despite the “growing sense of uncertainty,” Buchanan hosted a bridal shower and party with loved ones in April 2023.
“A few days later, I had a bad feeling that morning and was still trying to calm myself down when Adam walked into my room. As soon as I saw his face, I knew it was him,” she said.
“But when I heard him say we couldn’t get married, I couldn’t bear it. A wave of anger and humiliation washed over me. I screamed, and Adam stood there looking devastated.”
She recalled that she “just burst into tears” and threw a photo of the two of them against the wall.
“Adam stayed with his dad and I was left at home surrounded by wedding supplies. I couldn’t stop crying,” she said, adding that they spent more than $38,000 planning the wedding and were forced to tell all their guests the wedding would not be going ahead.
But she couldn’t just wallow in her grief and anger. So what’s better than revenge? Spending a ton of money on a Taylor Swift concert on her wedding day.
She spent over $2,000 on tickets for the Eras Tour and flew from Toronto to Texas, a whopping 1,300 miles from her home, for the show.
“On April 21st, instead of walking down the aisle in my wedding dress (which is still in my wardrobe), I was wearing a sparkly jacket and singing my heart out in front of a packed stadium,” she said. “It was amazing.”
Looking back now, Buchanan realizes that not only is she dating a “great guy,” but that she and Adam “never would have worked out.”
“On what would have been our wedding anniversary, I had a Taylor Swift party for my girlfriends and just felt joy,” she said.
“I don’t know if I’ll ever get married, but I’ve learned how important it is to be honest with the people you love. No relationship can last long without honesty.”
