AT&T Admits Cybercriminals Stole Phone Records of ‘Nearly All’ Customers

Telecommunications giant AT&T has announced that cybercriminals have stolen the call records of “almost all” of its customers. The compromised data includes millions of phone numbers, call logs, text message records, and customer location information.

AT&T will begin contacting its roughly 110 million customers about the data breach in which cybercriminals obtained call records, a company spokesman said. Said TechCrunch on Friday.

The spokesperson added that AT&T customer records were stolen from cloud data giant Snowflake, which has reportedly blamed the recent data theft on customers not using multi-factor authentication to secure their accounts.

AT&T Announced “Unauthorized access to customer data,” the website states.

“Our investigation determined that the downloaded data contained call and text message records for nearly all AT&T mobile phone customers from May 1, 2022 through Oct. 31, 2022, and Jan. 2, 2023,” the company said.

AT&T added that while “the access points are secured,” the stolen data includes not only AT&T landline (home) customers, but also customers of other mobile carriers that rely on AT&T’s network or communicated with AT&T mobile numbers.

The stolen records also included information that could be used to determine the number of calls and text messages made on any given day or month, the total duration of those calls, and the approximate locations of where calls were made and text messages sent over a six-month period.

AT&T said it “does not believe the data is public.”

The company added that the stolen data did not include the content of calls or text messages, or timestamps of calls or text messages, nor did it contain details about Social Security numbers, dates of birth or other personally identifiable information.

AT&T said it was working with law enforcement to catch the cybercriminals involved in the breach and that “at least one arrest has been made.”
