The Trump campaign confirmed that the former president was “safe” after an apparent shooting at a campaign rally in Pennsylvania on Saturday.
“President Trump thanks the police and emergency responders for their swift action in response to this heinous incident,” Trump campaign spokesman Steven Chang said in a statement.
“He is doing well and is undergoing examinations at a local medical facility. More details will be provided in due course,” he added.
Trump was speaking in Butler, Pennsylvania, a few days before the start of the Republican National Convention when several gunshots were heard during the rally and Trump quickly reached for his right ear.
He was then told to lie down, and did so under the podium. Secret Service agents swarmed him as attendees screamed. Agents could be heard saying the shooter had laid down.
Trump was then surrounded by agents and escorted off the stage, with footage showing him with blood near his right ear and appearing to pump his fist into the crowd and tell them to “fight” before leaving the stage.
Details of what happened were not immediately clear. The White House said President Biden, who is in Delaware, had been briefed on the incident.
A U.S. Secret Service spokesperson said on Wednesday that the incident is currently considered “under investigation by the Secret Service” and that “the Secret Service has implemented protective measures and the former president is safe.”
