Biden speaks with Trump after assassination attempt

WASHINGTON — President Biden met Saturday night with former President Donald Trump, who survived an assassination attempt at a rally in Pennsylvania.

Biden, 81, said Saturday that he had attempted to call the 78-year-old Republican presidential candidate, who is being treated at a Pittsburgh-area hospital.

“Tonight, President Biden spoke with former President Trump,” a White House official said. “The president also met with Pennsylvania Governor Josh Shapiro and Butler Mayor Bob Dandoy.”

The call came just before Biden cut short a weekend stay at his Delaware seaside home and returned to the White House.

It is unclear whether Biden spoke to Trump while he was receiving treatment for an abrasion on his right ear or after he had been released from the hospital.

In the wake of the shooting, Trump supporters have slammed Biden for frequently calling Trump a “dictator” during the campaign and for telling donors last Monday that he wanted to put a “target on” Trump.

Biden struck a conciliatory tone in a hastily scheduled speech at the Rehoboth Beach Police Department in Delaware on Saturday night.

“I’ve tried to reach Donald. He’s with his doctor. He appears to be doing well. I’ll speak with him as soon as we get back on the phone,” Biden said.
