The prodigal sport could finally return home tonight. After 58 years of hurt, and 28 years of talking about years of hurt, England’s players* have the chance to become immortal. There’s just one problem: Spain are really good.

It’s the irresistible force versus the indestructible object. From 1950 to 2023, England came from behind to win a knockout game just three times: West Germany 1966, Cameroon 1990 and Denmark 2021. They’ve doubled that in the past fortnight. If they win tonight, that will be their legacy.

Important Events
The Guardian’s excellent Karen Carney talks about the equally excellent Ramin Yamal.
“Hello everyone. Greetings from Vietnam.” Phil Keegan writes: “I remember watching the Spain ’82 match on TV. I was 22 years old. Kevin, like me, wasn’t the only one who missed a chance (and it was absolute “He took his only chance to beat the keeper but the other substitute, Trevor Brooking, also came close and only had a chance to beat the keeper but missed. To be fair, I remember a Spain player, I think he was a full-back, also had a chance to beat the keeper but missed. I can’t believe my brain is remembering such completely worthless information.”
ITV News is very keen to be involved in the Manchester Fanzone. It looks vibrant, to say the least.
“I watched the match with friends in Kutaisi, conveying my passion for the dynamic nature of Georgian football and watching the video of Dinamo Tbilisi beating my beloved Liverpool 3-1.” An email from Mikey Georgeson. “If Trent Alexander-Arnold plays he will be hoping to bring football home to his hometown, if not he will be happy enjoying the beautiful world in which he is now temporarily a son of Georgia.”
Mary Nightingale signed off on tonight’s ITV News from outside the stadium in Berlin. We are close to seeing expert opinion begin in earnest.
The eternal question: BBC or ITV?
England aren’t known for their counter-attacks these days, but it worked for them once before, against Spain…
Now I’ll hand over to Will Unwin for the next hour or so. Otherwise, I’ll be way too focused and out of the competition by the time kick-off comes. Team news should be confirmed at around 6:45pm BST, with Luke Shaw reportedly replacing Kieran Trippier as the only change to the England squad.
In their last two victories against SpainIn 2011 and 2018, England had less than 30% possession and it would be a surprise if that was the case, whatever the result tonight.
“To calm my nerves “I was thinking about England v Spain in 1982,” says Martin Widdix, “a truly forgotten story of England’s elimination. I’m well aware of Bonetti in ’70, Maradona in ’86, Pearce in ’90, but I know almost nothing about the Spain game in ’82. I’ll be happy to watch some faint highlights in a moment, but does anyone know more about that game?”
That was before I even played, but I know the basic story: England’s best players, Kevin Keegan and Trevor Brooking, had been out with injuries for the whole tournament and were only fit enough to be on the bench. They came on after about an hour, I think, and poor Keegan, playing in his only World Cup game, missed a brilliant heading chance to score the first of the two goals he needed.
May 23, 2001Oliver Kahn saved Valencia defender Mauricio Pellegrino’s penalty to lead Bayern Munich to the European crown. Since then, the Spanish men’s team (club and country) has won all 26 of their finals against foreign teams. I haven’t heard a more eye-opening statistic since I learned that Alec Stewart (born April 8, 1963) finished his test match career with 8,463 runs.
“I’ll be watching from sunny Bornuevo “I live in a local bar on the Murcia coast (not actually in a local bar),” Pat Manning wrote. “Hopefully I won’t have to hear the din of car horns and fireworks at the end of the game. Good luck.”
Some places will be more lively than others.
“There’s only one way to beat them/overload them in the midfield.”
“Hello, Rob.” Niall Mullen wrote: “Can you help me promote my start-up company, Pyrotechnic Suppository Solutions? I thought it would be successful but for some reason sales have been really slow.”
Hahaha. I wonder what AFG is doing today. I know lightning doesn’t strike twice, but with flares on it might strike twice.
3 years and 3 days Ever since England lost to Italy in the European Championship final, everyone involved has been determined not to make any mistakes: not to be deliberately aggressive in front of goal, not to hold on to leads or make substitutions after 120 minutes.
It was interesting re-reading Scott Murray’s epic MBM about that match and reliving the emotional highs and lows of that game.
18 minutes: Italy are slowly gaining a foothold in the game – a few passes, some probing on both flanks – and while it’s not enough to worry England just yet, there are signs that their opponents are starting to get going after their nightmare start.
Well, there are a lot of previews. Let’s start with David Goldblatt’s article on Gareth Southgate.
In a public conversation that is not based on facts, his coaching qualities have been dismissed and his enormous successes downplayed. His loyalty, stability and prudence have been mocked despite all we have been through in a time of political betrayal, chaos and recklessness. But perhaps we are at a turning point. England are in the final. Southgate’s detractors have fallen silent and his defenders have grown louder, but it still feels like a Labour landslide without love.
Spain v England: a short history
Tonight will mark the fifth time the two nations have met in a major tournament – twice at the World Cup and three at the Euros – although the quarter-final of Euro 68 should also be counted (at the time it was technically a four-team tournament, so the quarter-finals were part of the qualifying round).
Louise Taylor reflects on their last two encounters in the European Championship main draw.
Shaw is scheduled to start
Rumors on the Streets Luke Shaw to replace Kieran Trippier At left back, he is the only change from Wednesday’s semi-final against the Netherlands.
Spain will be back with Dani Carvajal and Robin Le Normand available again after returning from suspension and are likely to replace Jesus Navas and Nacho.
Spain (4-2-3-1) Simon; Carvajal, Le Normand, Laporte, Cucurella; Rodri, Fabian Ruiz; Ramin Yamal, Olmo, Williams; Morata.
England (3-4-2-1) Pickford; Walker, Stones, Guehi; Saka, Mainu, Rice, Shaw; Foden, Bellingham, Kane.

You’d better believe it, Brenda. England have reached four consecutive major football finals and the nation is in high spirits in life, football and the world. Neil Diamond’s Harmony.
The debauched sport may finally be coming home tonight. After 58 years of suffering, and 28 years of talking about it, England’s players have a chance to become immortal. There’s just one problem. Spain Really good.
