President Joe Biden issued his second statement in less than 24 hours regarding the shooting at a Pennsylvania rally that nearly killed former President Donald Trump.
At around 2 p.m. on Sunday, Biden, accompanied by Vice President Kamala Harris, Attorney General Merrick Garland, and Health and Human Services Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas, addressed the nation about the recent mass shootings. Biden argued that the “assassination attempt” on Trump “goes against everything, everything we stand for as a nation.”
Biden maintained that he had continued to authorize “all necessary resource capabilities and protective measures” to ensure Trump’s safety as part of the “enhanced security” to which Trump is already entitled as a former president and potential 2024 Republican presidential candidate.

“We’re going to debate and we’re going to disagree. That’s going to change,” Biden continued, “but we’re not going to lose sight of the facts. [of] Who we are as Americans.”
As part of his call for unity, Biden claimed he spoke with Trump on Saturday night, just hours after the shooting. Biden described the conversation as “brief but meaningful.” Biden offered prayers and well wishes to Trump, his family, all those injured, and the family of the rally attendee who was killed, later identified as Corey Comperatore.
Biden described Comperatore as a dedicated family man who died with honor, saying, “He was protecting his family from bullets. [that were] “It’s a shame he was fired,” Biden said. “He lost his life. God love him.”
Hours after the shooting, some of the most senior Democrats in Congress in recent months Tried Stripping Trump of Secret Service protection as part of a larger loafer campaign against him. Reportedly The movement was started in part by Attorney General Garland, who stood next to Biden as he spoke about the attempt on Trump’s life.
Perhaps to address those criticisms, Biden maintained that he had continued to authorize “all necessary resource capabilities and safeguards” to ensure Trump’s safety as part of the “enhanced security” that Trump already deserves as a former president and potential 2024 Republican presidential candidate.
Biden also said he was being kept updated on the increased security measures already being prepared ahead of the Republican National Convention, which is scheduled to begin on Monday.
Finally, Biden cautioned against “speculating” about the dead suspect, who was later identified by the FBI as Thomas Matthew Crooks. “I ask everyone, please, please do not speculate about his motives or affiliations,” Biden said. “Let the FBI and their partners do their job.”
The president spoke for a total of just over three minutes and did not answer questions, but indicated he would say more later Sunday evening, this time from the Oval Office.
