News Anchor Leaves Industry After Criticizing ‘Cleaned-Up’ Reporting

Iowa TV Anchor Critiques Journalism in Retirement Announcement

An Iowa television anchor, who recently announced his retirement, expressed concerns about what he termed “sanitized journalism” during his final broadcast. Dustin Nolan, the morning anchor for KWQC-TV in Davenport, has been waking up with viewers for many years.

As he bid farewell to the news industry, Nolan took the opportunity to reflect on the current state of journalism. His emotional goodbye included heartfelt thanks to the community for allowing him into their homes every morning.

In his words, “I have chosen to leave the news industry.” He went on to express gratitude: “To all of you who have allowed me to be a part of your morning, I hope you know how important it is that I got this job. It means so much to me that you trusted me with your morning news. I promise you, I gave my all to you. I’ve never aimed for perfection or tried to fit a certain mold; instead, I always aimed to be transparent, stick to the facts, and be myself.”

Nolan urged local news organizations to go beyond merely following trends and delivering what he calls sanitized content. He noted, “As a local news station, we owe it to our viewers to do what’s best for us because none of us could do this job without you. We need to be more than trends and sanitized news that make people comfortable. That’s why facts matter, and that’s why we do what we do here. We have to challenge people, take them out of their comfort zones, and make them think about the world we share.”

KWQC serves the Quad-Cities area, which spans both Iowa and Illinois. Nolan joined the station in 2022. In his farewell, he also acknowledged his wife, Jenna Nolan, who co-anchors with him.

“The hardest part of this job for me was realizing that I would no longer be working with Jenna,” Nolan added. “Not only is she the best co-anchor on the news desk, but she’s also the best co-anchor in life.”

Nolan did not disclose the reasons for his departure or what he plans to do next in his career.
