Swing district Dem calls out parties’ ‘dangerous lies’: ‘Democracy or authoritarianism’

Jared Golden, a Democrat from Maine, posted a lengthy thread on X about hyperbole in American politics, calling on politicians to stop labeling their opponents as “fascists.”

The vulnerable Democratic congressman told X he denounced the path the country is currently allegedly on, adding that leaders need to lead America down a different path.

“Let’s start by stopping the hyperbolic threats about the importance of this election,” he wrote. “Stop misleadingly portraying it as a battle between democracy and authoritarianism, or as a fight against fascists and socialists trying to destroy America. These are dangerous lies.”

Former President Trump was the target of an assassination attempt at a rally in Butler, Pennsylvania on Saturday. The shooting happened at around 6pm, just minutes after Trump took the stage. Trump could be seen with blood on his right ear and face as Secret Service agents escorted him off the stage.

Trump returned to his home in New Jersey after being treated for a wound to his ear at a local hospital. The shooter and two rally attendees were killed. Others are being treated at hospitals for injuries sustained.

Lawmakers quickly issued statements wishing President Trump and those in attendance safety.

“In the wake of the assassination attempt on former President Donald Trump, we must ask ourselves about the future of our country and what we want for ourselves and our children,” Golden wrote in a 10-part thread on X.

“In pursuit of short-term political gain, they are intent on exaggerating our differences and portraying their political opponents as demonic caricatures bent on destroying the country,” he said of those leading the country.

“The result is an overwhelming sense of fear and anxiety about the future of our country, and a sense that the normal, tried-and-true tools of democracy no longer seem sufficient to protect the public interest. In this light, it is sadly unsurprising that politically motivated violence is on the rise in the United States,” the congressman said.

Continuing on this path would have “disastrous” consequences, according to the Maine Democrat. Instead, he said the hyperbole must stop, and condemned the labeling of political opponents as fascists, authoritarians and socialists.

The Democrat is fighting for reelection in a highly competitive Maine district in the November election. Cook Political Report He rated his seat as a “close Democratic race.”
